What is Fssai License/ Registration?

Food License/ Registration is granted by the Food Standards and safety Authority of India to all the business entities who it believes is abiding by the safety standards subscribed by the FSSAI act. FSSAI issues a 16 digit FSSAI number that is mandatorily required to be there on every food package sold by the FBO. The main aim of this act is to improve and maintain the hygiene and quality of food supplied to the consumers in the market. This Food license can be obtained by making an application in the prescribed format.

Types of Food Registration?

There are millions of food operating businesses in India of multiple sizes and activities. Based on the turnover, scale of business and the type of activity the food business can obtain FSSAI registration or FSSAI license for themselves. Following are the criteria specified in rules in this regard-

FSSAI Basic registration

Where the annual turnover of the business unit does not exceeds Rs.12 lakhs it can obtain the basic FSSAI registration only. This registration is applicable on even the very small scale enterprise like a roadside stall, small restaurants, food vans etc. However, Basic registration can be upgraded to state license as the sales graph of business increases.

FSSAI State license

FSSAI state license must be obtained by the mid-sized companies which have annual turnover between Rs.12-20 crores. This state license is issued by the authority of the particular state like for the state license in Maharashtra the relevant state authority will issue the license.

FSSAI Central license

Every food business supplying his food items at the government offices or import / export food products is mandatorily required to obtain this license. Moreover, the large businesses with annual turnover above Rs.20 crores are also required to acquire this license.  Further the food operators who have business in more than one state are required to obtain this license for their head office.

Documents Required

The requirement depends upon the type of FSSAI license/ registration the applicant desires to obtain. Here we are giving the list of general documents that will be required in all of the three kind of food license –

  • Photo Identity of Promoters of the Food Business
  • Declaration Form
  • Authority Letter
  • Proof of possession of premises (Rental Agreement / Utility Bill)
  • Partnership Deed / Certificate of Incorporation / Articles of Association / Memorandum of Association
  • List of food products manufactures or processed or stored
  • Food safety management system plan
  • Signed and Completed Form-B

Duration

The validity of the food license depends upon the number of years chosen at the time of making the application. The maximum years for which this license can be obtained is 5 years and minimum number of years is 1 year.
