In order to ensure that all the food items making business entities comply with certain standards, the FSSAI(Food Safety and Standard Act 2006) registration was introduced. What is FSSAI license number?

The 16 digit number that is recorded by the FSSAI authorities and allotted to the applicant for the FSSAI registration is known as the FSSAI license number. This number is divided into 5 sections reflecting the basic data of the producer. The first digit of the number reflects whether the producer is enrolled with FASSAI or not, the following two digits are for state code, the next two digits tell the year in which the producer was enlisted. Further, the number of enlisting specialist is reflected by following three digits and remaining are the maker’s permit/enrollment number.

The rules regarding FASSAI number

The FASSAI number obtained by the producer and its logo must be placed on the label of the food package in a manner that it prominently visible.  Further, the color of the logo and number displayed shall be in contrast with the background in case of multiple units.

The license number should be placed on the addresses of the multiple units on the label of the product. Moreover, the number of the producing company must also be displayed along with the lot number.

When the goods are imported the importer is required to display the logo and License number of FASSAI along with the name and address of importer on a sticker to be affixed before getting customs clearance.

The size of the letters and the numerals of the license number should be as prescribed in Food Safety and Standard (Packaging and Labelling) Regulation, 2011.

Displaying the FASSAI logo and number on the product reflects that the food business operator possesses a valid license under the FASSAI Act, 2006.

A food business operator is empowered to put this logo and number only till the validity of the license obtained according to the Food Safety and Standards (Business and registration on food business) Regulations, 2011.
